Haverhill, MA – Following three days of qualifying at six sites located across the state, the field for the 2008 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship is now set. Those qualifiers will join the 20 exempt players at Championship Proper, which will be held on September 15-17 at Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield.
The final day of qualifying took place at Haverhill Country Club today and was highlighted by a 1-over par 71 performance by Matt Bianchini (Mount Pleasant CC).
Bianchini, a West Boylston resident, found a way to master the challenging layout as he won medalist honors by a commanding four strokes. His round began on a rocky note with a double bogey on the 356-yard, par 4 2nd hole. He went on to post one birdie and two bogies before creating a highlight reel clip of his own on the 399-yard, par 4 16th hole with an eagle 2!
Two players – Michael Kuzara (Thomson CC)and Steve Heffernan (Juniper Hill GC) – finished in a tie for second place with scores of 5-over par 75.
Seven players who posted a 10-over par 80 played off for the final four qualifying and two alternate spots. A total of 13 qualifiers advanced at that site.
