Headline: Joe Cunningham Fires 4-under par 68 at Final Day of State Public Links Qualifying

West Boxford, MA – Joe Cunningham (Brookline GC) capped off the final day of Massachusetts Public Links Qualifying today in fine fashion. The Chestnut Hill resident traveled to Far Corner Golf Course in West Boxford this afternoon and fired a sizzling 4-under par 68 to lead a field of 63 golfers.

Out of that starting field, only 14 competitors qualified and thus earned the right to compete in Championship Proper, which is scheduled for Blissful Meadows Golf Course on August 11-12. Today marked the third and final day of qualifying. Additional rounds were held on Monday and Tuesday at five sites located across the state.

On this day, however, Cunningham stole the show with his impressive round that featured five birdies and only one bogey. He must have felt like it was going to be a good day as Cunningham posted birdie on his first two holes. He went on to make one other birdie on the front nine – on the 411-yard, par 4 8th hole – to make the turn at 3-under par. Two birdies and a lone bogey later… Cunningham was packing up his golf bag and looking forward to competing in Uxbridge next month.

Finishing just two strokes back of Cunningham with a score of 2-under par 70 was Jeff Corbett (Sagamore Spring GC). Not to be outshined in the birdie category, Corbett also registered five birdies on the day. Although he made three bogies on the day, he finished four strokes better than the next qualifier.

Other notable qualifiers include David Velardo (CC of Billerica) and Mike Cole (Larry Gannon Municipal GC). While Velardo is one of three sets of brothers scheduled to compete in next weeks 100 th Massachusetts Amateur Championship, Cole is no stranger to the same event as he finished as runner up at the 2004 Massachusetts Amateur Championship.
