Headline: Championship Proper Field Set for 100th Massachusetts Amateur Championship

Norton, MA – Following nearly two weeks of qualifying held at 11 sites across the state, the field for the 2008 Massachusetts Amateur Championship is now set. The sixth and final day of qualifying was held today at three sites: Ellinwood CC (Athol); Framingham CC (Framingham); and Presidents GC (Quincy). A total of 32 qualifiers advanced at the three sites.

The day’s smallest field took part in an 18-hole qualifier in Athol at Ellinwood Country Club. JohnVaccaro (East Mountain CC) led the way with a score of even par 71. Vaccaro's round was a true roller coaster ride as he posted a 3-under par 32 on the front nine and a 3-over par 39 on the back nine.

On that spectacular front nine, Vaccaro made four birdies and one bogey! Also qualifying at that site were Michael Edson (Ellinwood CC), David Velardo (CC of Billerica) and Vin Sasso (Wachusett GC).

Leading the pack in Framingham with scores of 2-over par 74 were Max Campion (Pocasset GC) and Daniel Falcucci (Cyprian Keyes GC). Campion finished with three birdies and five bogeys on the day. Falcucci, meanwhile, made the turn at even par 36 and then used two birdies to make up for two bogeys and one double bogey on the back nine.

Another highlight of the day in Framingham was a hole in one posted by LJ Tosches (Highfields G&CC). Things did not always look so rosy for Tosches. Heading into his final two holes of the day, Tosches found himself 6-over par. He delivered when he needed it most, however, as he posted the hole in one on the 176-yard, par 3 17th hole and then a birdie on the 531-yard, par 5 18th hole.

On a day when no player was able to break par, Robert Monahan (Hatherly CC) did the next best thing as he earned sole medalists honors at Presidents Golf Course with a score of even par 70. Despite a slow start which saw him make the turn at 4-over par 38, Monahan righted the ship by making an eagle – on the 270-yard, par 4 11th hole – and two birdies on the back nine to pull even for the day. A total of 14 golfers advanced at the Quincy site.

The 32 players who advanced today will join the other qualifiers and exempt players at Championship Proper, which will be held on July 14-18 at The Kittansett Club in Marion. The championship field will consist of 144 players.
