Headline: Higgins, Stewart Score Victory at 2008 Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship
Franklin, MA – Brian Higgins (Franklin CC) drained a 12-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to pull out a come-from-behind victory at the 2008 Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship, which was held this week at Franklin Country Club and Maplegate Country Club.
Higgins and his partner Brad Stewart (Franklin CC) entered the final round of play five strokes back of first-round leaders Raymond Androlewicz (Webster-Dudley GC) and Dale Smith (Webster-Dudley GC).
However, Higgins and Stewart - playing on their home course in Franklin - displayed home-course knowledge by posting a 7-under par 64 on Tuesday to pull even with Androlewicz and Smith and force a playoff. The battle finally ended on the 160-yard, par 3 4th hole when Higgins sent his tee shot left of the green. Although it was just off target, the ball hit a bank five feet off the green and rolled to within 12 feet. He calmly rolled in his birdie putt for his first MGA Championship win.
The road to the playoff showdown was an exciting one for Higgins and Stewart as they posted an impressive 7-under par 64 round on Tuesday which featured nine birdies. On the front nine, both players made three birdies apiece to make the turn at 6-under par 29. The back nine was an adventure as they registered three birdies and two bogeys to boast the low round of the day.
While Higgins and Stewart were moving up the leaderboard, Androlewicz and Smith were making few errors but could not duplicate their 7-under par performance from the day before. On this day they posted a total of three birdies and one bogey to finish with a two-day score of 9-under par 134.
Finishing in a three-way tie for third place with scores of 7-under par 136 were the teams of Greg Strattner (The Ranch GC) and Dan Fanion (The Ranch GC), Herbert Aikens (Pinehills GC) and Ryan Riley (Norton CC) and Philip Smith (Vesper CC) and Mike Bushnell (Mount Pleasant GC). The team of Aikens and Riley delivered an impressive 7-under par 64 performance today in Franklin which matched the low round of the day. After making the turn at 2-under par 33, the pair dominated the back nine with Riley making four of the team’s five birdies.
