News Release

Owen O'Malley
For Immediate Release: October 23, 2007
Norton, MA – The Massachusetts Golf Association (MGA) today announced the departure of one of its staff members, Owen O'Malley.
A seven-year veteran of the association, O'Malley has served as director of rules and competitions of the 501(c)3 organization since November 2004. Effective November 1, O'Malley will be relocating to California where he will be serving as operations manager for the law firm of Eagan, O'Malley & Avenatti LLP.
"For the past seven years, Owen has worked in nearly every department here at the Massachusetts Golf Association," said Joseph J. Sprague, Jr., executive director of the MGA. "He has forged strong relationships with Member Club representatives and all of the players who compete in our championship program. His tireless work ethic as director of rules and competitions is a major reason why the MGA is considered a leader in state championship administration."
As director of rules and competitions, O'Malley is responsible for managing the 11 MGA Championship events, 33 MGA qualifying rounds, 12 USGA qualifying rounds and three New England Golf Association Championship events. The annual tournament schedule draws more than 3,000 applicants each year. This past season, O'Malley spearheaded the implementation of a new Pace of Play Policy at all MGA championship events. The program was successful as it reduced the average round time by more than 45 minutes.
O'Malley also annually manages a corps or more than 100 tournament volunteers, who hail from all parts of the Bay State. An expert in the USGA Rules of Golf, O'Malley holds regional seminars for MGA Member Clubs and tournament officials.
Prior to his time as director of rules and competitions, O'Malley served as the director of handicapping. In that capacity, O'Malley was responsible for the USGA/GHIN handicapping program which manages the handicaps for more than 90,000 golfers in Massachusetts.
Sprague hopes to name a successor within the next two months.
