Headline: Crawford, Fowler, Wedge & Murphy Lead Massachusetts Senior Championship Following Day 1

East Falmouth , MA – On a near perfect fall afternoon, Doug Crawford (Stow Acres CC), George Fowler (Pawtucket CC) and Paul Murphy (Charles River CC) displayed poise and patience as they fired day-low scores of 2-over par 74 to take a one-shot lead following the first round of the 2007 Massachusetts Senior Championship.

This popular senior amateur tournament is being held this week at the newly-opened The Golf Club of Cape Cod in East Falmouth.

Following today's first round, the entire field will be re-paired according to score. The competitors will return to The Golf Club of Cape Cod on Tuesday to compete in a second and final round of 18 holes at stroke play. The lead group of Crawford, Fowler and Murphy is scheduled to tee off at 1:27 p.m., while Wedge will begin his round at 1:18 p.m.

Fowler, one of the first golfers off the tee this morning, struggled through a tough start as he made double bogey on the 304-yard, par 4 2nd hole. He responded well, however, as he made back-to-back birdies on the 539-yard, par 5 5th and 430-yard, par 4 6th holes. A bogey on the 170-yard, par 3 8 th hole put him at 1-over par 37 at the turn. A double bogey and a birdie – on the 377-yard, par 4 15th hole – down the stretch propelled him to the top of the leaderboard. Meanwhile, Crawford posted three bogeys – on the 4th, 10th and 16th holes – and one birdie on the day, while Murphy registered four bogeys and two birdies to capture a share of the top spot. Wedge was the final leader to post his score. He began his round on the 10th hole and went on to make four bogeys and two birdies as the afternoon wore on.

One back of the leaders with a score of 3-over par 75 is Jim Deveney, Jr. (Essex CC), while nine players – William Boucher (Framingham CC), Robert Bradley (Ponkapoag GC), Cliff Calvao (Stow Acres CC), Ken Diskin (Stow Acres CC), Carter Fasick (Indian Meadows GC), Andrew Horvitz (Allendale CC), Claude Hoopes (The Kittansett Club), Ray Richard (Thorny Lea GC) and John Ryan (The Ridge Club) are still also very much in the hunt after firing scores of 4-over par 76.

While Deveney may sit in fifth position overall, he is the current leader in the Super Senior Divison, which includes all competitors 65 years and older. Deveney's round featured four bogeys and a birdie on his final hole of the day… the 381-yard, par 4 9 th hole.

One name missing from this year's field is defending champion and four-time George M. Cohen MGA Senior Player of the Year Jim Ruschioni (Indian Meadows GC). Ruschioni, who did not compete in last month's New England Senior Championship, has been sidelined with a back injury. Past champions in this year's field include Joseph Keller(Oyster Harbors Club) – 2005; Donald Anderson (The Kittansett Club) – 2004; James Drohen (Crystal Springs GC) – 2003; Don Zagoren (CC of New Seabury) – 1999; Jim Holbrook (Ferncroft CC) – 1996-97; and Fordie Pitts, Jr. (Hyannis GC) – 1985, 1989.
