Headline: Mark Plummer Captures 2007 New England Senior Championship After Two-Hole Playoff

York, ME – Just five months after turning 55 years old, Mark Plummer (Augusta CC - ME) made New England Golf Association (NEGA) history. Plummer, a Manchester (ME) resident, captured the 2007 New England Senior Championship title this afternoon following a two-hole playoff at York Golf & Country Club.

With the victory, Plummer becomes the first player in NEGA history to capture both the New England Amateur (1979, 1994) and the New England Senior Championships.

Plummer, who capped off the two-day tournament with a second-round score of 7-over par 77, is no stranger to winning titles as he is a 13-time winner of the Maine State Amateur Championship. He also – just last month – became the first golfer in Maine history to capture the Maine Junior, Amateur and Senior Championships.

Plummer made sure that his victory would not soon be forgotten as he drained a 16-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to defeat Greg Karakashian (Stanley GC - CT). The road to that final moment was not fairy-tale like as Plummer struggled all day long. After entering the final round with a seemingly comfortable two-stroke lead, Plummer ran into trouble quickly as two bogeys, one double bogey and one birdie led to a 3-over par 38 front-nine score. On the back nine, two bogeys, one birdie and an uncharacteristic triple bogey on the 200-yard, par 3 14th hole opened the door to the rest of the field.

Although Plummer may have wished for a smoother end to the round, it was indeed a gallery-pleasing finish as three competitors – Plummer, Karakashian and KenMoller (Bretwood Golf Club - NH) found themselves in a three-way tie for first place with final scores of 5-over par 145.

Karakashian battled Plummer to end as he sent his approach shot on the second playoff hole into the left greenside bunker. He was unable to hole his bunker shot and then watched as Plummer drained his birdie putt. Heading into the final day, Karakashian was five shots back of the lead and he did his best to challenge the top spot by firing an impressive 2-over par 72 on Thursday afternoon. The 2006 Connecticut Senior Amateur Champion posted two birdies – on the 2nd and 8th holes – and two bogeys to make the turn at even par 35. Karakashian, a New Britain resident who earlier this summer captured the City Championship at his home club of Stanley Golf Course, had a rough stretch on the back nine where he made three bogeys and one birdie. It appeared that he would drop another stroke on the 395-yard, par 4 18th hole, but he sank a 20-foot par putt to finish at 2-over par for the day.

Moller earned a berth into the playoff after posting a 2-over par 72 during the afternoon hours. On the day, Moller registered five bogeys and three birdies. His third and final birdie came on the all-important 18 th hole which allowed him to continue on to the playoff. His chances for the title came to a quick end, however, as he made bogey on the 225-yard, par 4 1st hole, while Plummer and Karakashian made par.

In the Super Senior Division – which includes all competitors 65 years and older –Jim Holbrook (Ferncroft CC - MA) stormed from behind with a final round score of 4-over par 74 to capture the title. Holbrook finished tied with Fred Kask (Weathersfield CC - CT) with a score of 12-over par 152, but Kask suffered an injury was unable to participate in the playoff and thus Holbrook was crowned the Super Senior Division champion.
