Headline: 54 Golfers Advance During Day 1 of 2007 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Qualifying

Norton, MA – Playing in near perfect conditions, a total of 54 golfers earned themselves a spot at the 2007 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship this afternoon following qualifying that was held at three sites: Country Club of New Bedford, Hopkinton Country Club and Sheraton Colonial Hotel & Golf Club.

As a result of their performance today, these players can now look forward to Championship Proper, which will be held on September 24-26 at Cohasset Golf Club. A second and final day of qualifying will be held tomorrow, September 5, at three sites: Crestview CC, Dennis Pines GC & Duxbury YC.

Here are highlights from today's three sites:

Country Club of New Bedford
Phillip Chassey (Lakeville CC), Keith Early (Wachusett CC) and Dan Maceachern (Thorny Lea GC) all posted scores of 3-over par 73 to earn a share of medalist honors in New Bedford. Chassey and Early posted identical splits of 37-36, while Maceachern battled back from a 3-over par 39 front nine with an even par 34 on the back nine. A total of 16 golfers advanced at that site, including one host club member – Jason Hantman (CC of New Bedford ).

Sheraton Colonial Hotel & Golf Club
Fresh off his victory at the Ouimet Memorial Tournament earlier this summer, Darren Bolton (Larry Gannon Municipal GC) continued his dominating ways by posting a stellar medalist score of 2-under par 68. Bolton , a Lynnfield resident who graduated from Columbia University in 2005, posted splits of 34 on the front and back nine to lead a pack of 17 qualifiers. Also qualifying at that North Shore site was Mike Slosek (Skyline CC), who just one week ago was one of four players to advance at U.S. Mid-Amateur Local Qualifying that was held at Charter Oak Country Club.

Hopkinton Country Club
Veteran Carter Fasick (Indian Meadows GC) continued his strong play this summer as he posted a 3-under par 68 to capture the top spot in Hopkinton. Fasick, a four-time Massachusetts Four-Ball Champion, made the turn at 2-under par 34. He continued his exceptional play down the stretch as he posted a 1-under par 34 on the back nine. The only other players in the field to equal that 1-under par 34 mark on the back nine were Bob Creeden (Woodland GC) and Andy Berman (Nashawtuc CC), who finished in second and third place with scores of even par 71 and 1-over par 72, respectively. A total of 21 competitors advanced at that site.
