Headline: Dana and Anthony Dilisio Capture 2007 Massachusetts Father & Son Championship
Andover, MA – In the end, the five-hour wait was more than worth the effort.
After posting a 3-under par 69 during the morning hours, the team of Dana Dilisio (Salem CC) and Anthony Dilisio (Salem CC) had no choice but to wait patiently as the rest of the 110-team field finished their rounds. When the final scorecard was turned in, the Dilisios learned that their score had held up and they were the new champions of the Massachusetts Father & Son Championship.
This marks the first time that the Dilisios have captured an MGA Championship. On the road to victory, the father and son pair played near perfect golf as they finished with five birdies and one double bogey. The duo started their round during the morning hours and took advantage of the cooler morning weather as they posted three birdies on the front nine. A double bogey on the 392-yard, par 4 9th put them at 1-under par 35 at the turn. On the back nine, they played steady golf and made two early birdies – on the 189-yard, par 3 and 343-yard, par 4 11th and 12th holes – and seven pars to finish at 1-under on the back nine and 3-under par for the tournament.
One back of the Dilisios was the team of Brian Ray (Ledgemont CC) and Brendon Ray (Ledgemont CC) with a score of 2-under par 70. The putter proved to be the difference as they made three birdies and two bogeys on the day. The two bogeys came as a result of three putts. Another critical three putt came on the 307-yard, par 4 16th hole where Brendon had successfully driven the green. Brian capped off their round in dramatic fashion, however, as he drained a 30-foot putt on the 397-yard, par 4 18th hole.
Finishing in third place was the team of Frank Vana, Jr. (Marlborough CC) and Frank Vana, Sr. (Marlborough CC) with a score of 1-under par 71. The duo, who won this event in 2003, had one misstep along the way which caused them the championship as they made a triple bogey on the 479-yard, par 4 6th hole. Other than that, they posted one eagle, three birdies and one bogey on the day. Interestingly, Frank, Jr. paired with his mother Debbie just last week to capture the WGAM's Mother & Son Championship. The pair posted an identical 71!
Although their score was not atop the leaderboard, one team made a special mark on the tournament this year. The team of Charles Stradford (Special Olympics GC) and Ronald Stradford (Special Olympics GC) were competing on behalf of the Special Olympics for the first time in the event's history. Even more impressive than their finish was the fact that young Charles successfully completed his first 18 holes of golf today.
The Massachusetts Father & Son Championship is one of 10 championships on the Massachusetts Golf Association's schedule. This popular event pits the winners of the Father & Son Gross Championship from each MGA member club against each other in an 18-hole foursomes stroke play format.
