Headline: Team Connecticut Holds Off Massachusetts to Capture 2007 New England Junior Championship
Hamden, CT – After three rounds -- the third played in a steady rain at the New Haven Country Club in Hamden, CT -- it came down to a tie breaker to determine this year's New England Junior Invitational Championship team.
Despite having the top two individual finishers in Taylor Fontaine at 215 and Max Campion at 218, Massachusetts fell to the depth that host state Connecticut showed all week.
Although the two teams were tied after the three rounds at 1107, the tie breaker -- the sixth player's score in the final round -- gave Connecticut the championship by one.
The tournament, which features the top seven junior golfers from each of the six New England states, counts five of seven scores in each of three stroke play rounds.
The tournament concluded today with 18 holes in the rain. The players had played 36 holes on Monday. Maine fared very well, finishing third to the two larger New England states, led by Ryan Gay and Bryan Otis, who tied for fourth overall at 222. And the future continues to look bright for Maine junior golf -- only Otis and Johnny Hayes IV won't be eligible for next year's team, as all the other players are either 15 or 16.
