Headline: Two Advance to U.S. Junior Amateur Championship Following Local Qualifying

Seekonk, MA – More than 50 golfers battled the sweltering heat and competed in a 36-hole qualifier today at Ledgemont Country Club in hopes of advancing to the 2007 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. In the end, two talented young players played exceptional golf en route to qualifying today in Seekonk.

Leading the way with a remarkable score of 9-under par 133 was the 2006 Massachusetts Junior Champion Antonio Grillo (Vineyard Haven, MA). Grillo, who just finished his junior year at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School and was also the 2006 Christopher Cutler Rich MGA Junior Player of the Year, finished his first 18 holes with a score of 6-under par 65. As the day wore on, his game remained strong despite the scorching heat as he finished with a 3-under par 68.

Three shots back with a score of 6-under par 136 was Taylor Fontaine (Southbridge, MA), who as second to Grillo at last year’s Massachusetts Junior Championship. Following a morning round of 2-under par 69, Fontaine posted a 4-under par 67 to capture that second qualifying spot by four shots.

Grillo and Fontaine will now set their sights on the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which will be held on July 23-28 at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, MO.
