Headline: Geoff Sisk Makes History By Capturing His 6th Massachusetts Open Championship Title
Salem, MA – In what was a three-day, memorable battle between two local golf professional powerhouses, Geoff Sisk (Marshfield, MA) emerged as the victor and captured his sixth Massachusetts Open Championship title this afternoon at Kernwood Country Club.
The Marshfield-based professional who competes on the North American Pro Golf Tour posted a final round score of 10-under par 200 to edge host site head golf professional Frank Dully (Kernwood CC) by four strokes. With the victory, Sisk joins Alex Ross – the famed brother of Donald Ross – as the only golfers in Massachusetts golf history to capture six Massachusetts Open titles. Sisk, who capped off the tournament with a third-round score of 2-under par 68, has now won this event in 1995, 1997, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2007.
The battle between Sisk and Dully began on Monday as these two players were paired together for the first two rounds of play. Sisk edged Dully by one stroke on Day 1 with a 2-under par 68. On the second day, the two players matched each other shot for shot as both posted a Kernwood Country Club competitive course record of 6-under par 64 to set up a final showdown on Wednesday.
On the final day, Sisk demonstrated his poise and methodical nature as he carved up the course and slowly broke away from the pack. Sisk made his move early by making birdie on the 1 st and 3 rd holes. Despite posting three straight pars to start his round, Dully found himself three back of Sisk. Dully then registered two bogeys and one birdie through his next five holes to make the turn at even par 35 and fall four strokes off the pace.
Sisk, meanwhile, seemed unfazed by the large gallery that was following the home course head golf professional as he continued to play steady golf, registering eight straight pars. And just when Dully began to make a move – like when he scored his second birdie of the day on the 12 th hole – Sisk had an answer as he matched that birdie to move to 11-under par with only six holes left. Sisk made one bogey and four pars to cap off his round and seal his sixth victory. Dully finished at 6-under par 204 for the event to capture second place. First-round leader Rob Corcoran (Melbourne, FL) claimed third place with a score of 4-under par 206.
Taking home The Commonwealth Cup for the low amateur score of the tournament were Brian Higgins (Franklin CC) and Bill Drohen (Bradford CC), who finished with scores of 2-over par 212.
Massachusetts Open Championship – Round 3 Notes:
- The round of the day was posted by Kyle Gallo (Kensington, CT), who jumped from a tie for 18th to fourth place following a day-low round of 5-under par 65. Gallo's round featured five birdies and zero bogeys. He also hit all 18 greens in regulation.
- Following the first two rounds of play, the 150-player field was reduced to the lowest 40 scorers and ties. This year's cut line was set at 5-over par 145. Forty-three competitors, including 34 professionals and nine amateurs, made the cut this year.
