Headline: Sisk, Dully Shoot Course Record 6-under par 64 To Lead at State Open Championship
Salem, MA – Defending and five-time champion Geoff Sisk (Marshfield, MA) and local favorite Frank Dully (Kernwood CC) both fired a course-record 6-under par 64 today to take command of the Massachusetts Open Championship, which is being held this week at Kernwood Country Club in Salem.
Those two scores match the competitive course record that was shot by current PGA Champions Tour player Dana Quigley in a 1994 qualifier for the PGA Club Professional Championship.
As a result of their spectacular play today, Sisk and Dully will be paired together in tomorrow's third and final round. Sisk currently leads the field by one with a score of 8-under par 132, while Dully is right behind him at 7-under par 133. Following today's second round, the 150-player field was reduced to the low 43 scorers. Those players will return to Kernwood Country Club tomorrow to compete in a third and final round of play. The lead group of Dully and Sisk are scheduled to tee off at 10:39.
Sisk, who won this event in 1995, 1997, 2002, 2004 and 2006, struggled a bit during his first nine holes as he made an uncharacteristic three bogeys and only two birdies to make the turn at 1-over par 36. His final nine holes was an entirely different story, however, as Sisk showed why he is the reigning money winner on the North American Pro Golf Tour and the only player in the field who earned a berth into last week's U.S. Open Championship.
Sisk made birdie on eight of his final 10 holes, including a remarkable chip-in on the 8 th hole. The birdie train started on the 18 th hole when he made an eight-foot downhill putt. He then proceeded to make birdie on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd holes. Two straight pars were then followed by four birdies through his final four holes. He finished off his round in fine fashion by draining a 25-foot putt on the 9th hole to take his first lead of the championship.
Dully, the 10-year head golf professional at Kernwood Country Club who has been followed by throngs of fans and club members all week long, started off strong by registering birdies on the 12th, 13th and 15th holes to make the turn at 3-under par 32. And while Sisk was tearing up on the front nine, Dully methodically went about his business by posting birdies on the 2nd and 4th holes. He then capped off his blemish-free round with his sixth birdie of the day on the 9th hole.
First-round co-leader Rob Corcoran (Melbourne, FL) could not repeat his 4-under par 66 magic from Monday but he did respond with a solid even par 70 this morning which puts him in third place overall. Two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine – he started his round on the 10 th hole – were followed by a one-birdie and one-bogey performance on the front nine.
Massachusetts Open Championship – Round 2 Notes:
- The shot of the day was made by local amateur Robert Wight (Salem CC), who notched a hole in one on the 164-yard, par 3 4th hole. Wight earned a berth into Championship Proper after qualifying at his home course of Salem Country Club last month.
- This year's cut line was set at 5-over par 145. A total of 43 players – 34 professionals and nine amateurs – made the cut and earned the right to compete in Wednesday's final round.
- Posting the comeback round of the day was amateur Matt Parziale (Thorny Lea GC), who rebounded from a first-round score of 10-over par 80 with a 4-under par 66 this afternoon.
