Headline: Philip Smith Fires 1-under par 71 to Lead at Day 3 of Massachusetts Amateur Qualifying

Tyngsboro, MA – Philip Smith (Vesper CC) proved that he knows his home course well as he fired a medalist score of 1-under par 71 at today’s Massachusetts Amateur Championship qualifier, which was held at Vesper Country Club.

As a result of his strong performance, Smith – along with the other 16 qualifiers – have now earned a spot at Championship Proper, scheduled for July 9-13 at Concord Country Club.

Smith, who found himself 1-over par at the turn, made the most of the back nine by registering a 2-under par 34 to cap off his strong round. Earlier this spring, Smith finished in first place at the Norfolk County Classic.

Two strokes off Smith's medalist pace was Ken Gys (Mount Pleasant GC) with a score of 1-over par 73. Home course knowledge assisted not only Smith this afternoon as a total of six Vesper Country Club members advanced during today's qualifiers.

Here is a schedule of additional qualifying rounds that will be held as a prelude to Championship Proper.
