Headline: 39 Advance to Massachusetts Amateur Championship Following Day 2 of Qualifying
Norton, MA – From the North Shore to Cape Cod, competitors took to the course today to compete in qualifying rounds in hopes of advancing to the 2007 Massachusetts Amateur Championship, which will be held on July 9-13 at Concord Country Club.
As part of the second day of qualifying, 18-hole rounds were held at Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover, Franklin Country Club in Franklin and at the Wianno Club in Osterville. At the day's largest site – Indian Ridge Country Club – young Zack Ungvarsky (CC of Billerica) led a field of 17 qualifiers with a blistering score of 4-under par 67. Ungvarsky, who is coming off a strong freshman campaign at the University of Hartford, made the turn at 3-under par 32 and never looked back as he capped off his impressive round with a back nine score of 1-under par 35.
Two shots back of Ungvarsky were Omorry James (William J. Devine GC) and John Gilmartin (Indian Ridge CC) with scores of 2-under par 69. Also qualifying at that site was Colin Brennan (Indian Ridge CC), who just last month partnered with Evan Harmeling to become the youngest champions of the Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship, and Aaron Ungvarsky (CC of Billerica), older brother of Zack. Golfing excellence runs in the family as the Ungvarsky brothers are nephews of longtime PGA Tour player Joey Sindelar.
And file this under too little too late… James Gaffney (Long Meadow GC) came one shot shy of qualifying at Indian Ridge Country Club despite making a hole in one on the second hole. After making a double bogey on the first hole, Gaffney rebounded by holing a 4 iron from 190 yards.
In other qualifying action, Mark O'Sullivan (Stow Acres CC) was the only player to shoot under par at Franklin Country Club as he posted a 2-under par 69 to earn medalist honors. He was one of 12 qualifiers from that site. On Cape Cod, it was veteran Joseph Keller (Oyster Harbors Club) who topped the field with a 1-under par 69. Keller, the 2005 Massachusetts Senior Champion, made the turn at 3-under par 32 and held on for the one-shot edge over Steve Winter (Walpole CC).
Here is a schedule of additional qualifying rounds that will be held as a prelude to Championship Proper.
