Headline: James Driscoll Shoots Course Record; Captures Top Spot at U.S. Open Qualifying

Plymouth, MA – Former Massachusetts Golf Association (MGA) Player of the Year and two-time Massachusetts Amateur Champion James Driscoll (Reston, VA) fired a course record 7-under par 65 this afternoon at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth to capture medalist honors at U.S. Open Local Qualifying.

Driscoll, a native of Brookline who won the State Amateur in 1996 and 1998, spent two years on the PGA Tour and currently enjoys exempt status on the Nationwide Tour.

Driscoll made the most of his return home today as he posted seven birdies and zero bogeys on the Nicklaus Course. He started strong on the front nine by registering birdies on the 2nd, 6th, 7th and 9th holes to make the turn at 4-under par 32. On the 9th hole, he chipped in from 10 yards off the green. With the ocean wind picking up as the day wore on, Driscoll continued his strong play on the back nine as he added birdies on the 10th, 14th and 16th holes to cap off a record-setting round.

Finishing three strokes back of Driscoll was Champions Tour player Kirk Hanefeld (Acton, MA). Hanefeld, who finished at 4-under par 68, is the former director of golf at The International Golf Club in Bolton. Also qualifying today was five-time Massachusetts Open Champion Geoff Sisk (Marshfield, MA) and Brent Wanner (Orleans, MA), the 1999 Christopher Cutler Rich MGA Junior Player of the Year. Sisk, who will be looking to defend his Massachusetts Open Championship title next month at Kernwood Country Club in Salem, posted a 3-under par 69, while Wanner captured the fifth and final qualifying spot with a score of 2-under par 70. John Hickson (Topsham, ME) was also a qualifier as he equaled Sisk’s score of 3-under par 69 for a share of third place overall.

By virtue of qualifying today, these five competitors have earned the right to advance to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying, which will be held on June 4-5. A second and final round of local qualifying will take place on May 15th at Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston. This year’s U.S. Open Championship is scheduled for June 14-17 at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, PA.

The MGA annually conducts qualifying rounds for the major United States Golf Association (USGA) Championships, including the U.S. Open, Senior Open, Amateur, Junior Amateur, Senior Amateur, Mid-Amateur and the Amateur Public Links.
