Headline: Chris Anderson & Matt Parziale Lead Way at 27th Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship
Boylston, MA – Despite an hour-long frost delay, a total of 200 two-man teams took to Mount Pleasant Country Club in Boylston and Shaker Hills Golf Club in Harvard today to compete in the 27th Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship.
Leading the way after the first round is the team of Chris Anderson (Thorny Lea GC) and Matt Parziale (Thorny Lea GC), who fired an impressive 8-under par 63 at Shaker Hills Golf Club.
Anderson and Parziale, as well as the other 199 teams competing in this year's event, will return to Mount Pleasant Country Club and Shaker Hills Golf Club on Tuesday for a second and final round of play. Teams that competed at Mount Pleasant CC on Monday will play Shaker Hills GC on Tuesday and vice versa.
On this day, Anderson and Parziale were unstoppable as they posted 10 birdies and only two bogeys. The duo started on the 1st hole and made birdie on the 2nd, 4th, 7th and 9th holes to make the turn at 4-under par 32. They kept the momentum going on the back nine and were 9-under par through 16 holes courtesy of birdies on the 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th and 15th holes. The only hiccups on the day came on the 230-yard, par 3 16th and 460-yard, par 4 18th holes where they registered bogeys. Parziale, who is coming off a stellar season at Southeastern University where he became only the second golfer in school history to be named an NCAA First Team All-American, finished the day with seven birdies while Anderson chipped in the other three.
Just one stroke back of the leaders are Frank Vana, Jr. (Marlborough CC) and Brendan Hester (Pleasant Valley CC) as they posted a 7-under par 64 at the same course. The duo from Worcester County started on the 10th hole and made birdie on the 19th, 13th and 14th holes to make the turn at 3-under par. On the back nine they turned on the jets as they made five birdies and only one bogey to finish at 7-under for the day. Vana, an eight-time Richard D. Haskell MGA Player of the Year and two-time champion of this event, posted five birdies on the day. Hester, the 2001 Massachusetts Amateur Champion, finished with three birdies of his own.
Tied for third place with scores of 5-under par 66 are Evan Harmeling (Andover CC) and Colin Brennan (Indian Ridge CC) and Philip Smith (Vesper CC) and Mike Bushnell (Mount Pleasant GC). Harmeling and Brennan, high school standouts from the North Shore, played impressive team golf as Harmeling scored an eagle and Brennan added three birdies. Meanwhile, Smith and Bushnell waited until the end of the day to make their move as they followed up nine straight pars with five birdies through their final nine holes. Both teams also played at Shaker Hills GC today.
Posting the day-low score at Mount Pleasant Country Club was the team of Nick Nardacci (Acushnet River Valley GC) and Jack Varner (CC of Greenfield) with a score of 2-under par 70. Varner is very familiar with MGA Championship events as he partnered with Tom Bergeron in 2005 to win the Massachusetts Senior Four-Ball Championship.
