Far Hills , NJ – Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass., near Boston, has been selected by the United States Golf Association as the site of the 2009 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.
The dates of the championship are June 22-27. Designed by Brian Silva and opened in 2002, Red Tail Golf Club (www.redtailgolf.net) will be hosting its first USGA Championship. Named after the Red Tail hawks that live in the area, the course is built on a former Army base, Fort Devens. The terrain varies from classic New England landscapes of various trees to tall grasses and sands like coastal courses.
The club is the first Aububon International Signature Sanctuary golf course in Massachusetts and New England. Red Tail Golf Club hosted the 2005 Massachusetts State Junior Championship and is the annual site for the New England PGA Assistants' Championship. The U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links is making its first stop in the state of Massachusetts.
"Our entire organization is honored and thrilled to be able to host the first WAPL Championship in New England," said general chairman Jim Pavlik.
Prior to 2009, the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links will be played at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky., from June 18-23, 2007; and at Erin Hills Golf Club in Erin, Wis., from June 17-22, 2008.
The U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links, for female amateurs who have USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 18.4, who are strictly public course players, is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
The USGA is the national governing body of golf in this country and Mexico, a combined territory that includes more than half the game's golfers and golf courses. The Association's most visible role is played out each season in conducting 13 national championships, including the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open and U.S. Senior Open. Ten additional USGA national championships are exclusively for amateurs, and include the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Women's Amateur.
