Headline: David & Ryan Friel Team Dominate, Capture the 2006 Massachusetts Father & Son Championship Title
Dedham, MA – The team of David Friel (Vesper CC) and Ryan Friel (Vesper CC) posted an incredible 10 birdies this afternoon en route to capturing the 2006 Massachusetts Father & Son Championship, which was held at Dedham Country & Polo Club. The Friels finished with a final score of 5-under par 65, which was two shots better than the second-place team of Edward Sennett (Taconic GC) and Thomas Sennett (Taconic GC).
The Friels posted a memorable round, which included six birdies on the front nine. The duo didn't start off too well, however, as they registered a bogey on the second hole to drop to 1-over par through the first two holes. That would be the last time that the team would be over par as they proceeded to post birdies on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th holes to make the turn at 4-under par 32. After making par on the next three holes, they added birdies on that 362-yard, par 4 13th, 201-yard, par 3 14th and 366-yard, par 4 15th. Following a par on the 16th hole they added their 10 th birdie of the day on the 17th hole. Unbelievably, the Friels ran into trouble on the finishing 18th hole as they registered a triple bogey to finish at 5-under par 65.
Three strokes back of the Friels with a score of 3-under par 67 were Edward and Thomas Sennett, who hail from Taconic Golf Club. The Sennett duo posted four birdies – on the 1st, 4th, 8th and 9th holes – and two bogeys on the front nine to make the turn at 2-under par 34. On the back nine, they made all pars save a lone birdie on the 13th hole to finish two shots back of the leaders.
Finishing in third place were four-time champions of this event, Joseph Cook (Brockton CC) and Jason Cook (Brockton CC). The Cooks, who were victorious at this event in 1987, 1989, 1995 and 1998, carded a 1-under par 69 following a four-birdie and three-bogey performance.
