Headline: 54 Juniors, 35 Pre-Junior Competitors Advance to Massachusetts Junior Championship
Norton, MA – A total of 54 Junior and 35 Pre-Junior competitors earned the right to compete in the 2006 Massachusetts Junior Championship following local qualifying, which was held today at five sites – Mount Pleasant Golf Club, Monoosnock Country Club, Norfolk Golf Club, Round Hill Golf Links and Wyantenuck Country Club.
Championship Proper for this event, which includes competitors age 17 and below, will be held at Blue Hill Country Club in Canton on July 31-August 1.
Monoosnock Country Club
In Leominster , there were 12 Junior Division and nine Pre-Junior Division qualifiers. Leading the way in the Junior Division were co-medalists, Devin Bibeau (Highfields G & CC) and Ryan Oakes-Rooney (Hickory Ridge CC) with scores of 1-over par 71. Edward McQuiston (Amherst GC) was the low Pre-Junior qualifier with a score of 6-over par 76.
Mount Pleasant Golf Club
In Lowell, there was no question who the best golfer was on the course as Chase Lovett-Woodsum (Pine Brook CC) cruised to medalist honors with a dominating score of 5-under par 67. Lovett-Woodsum was 2-under par 34 following the first nine holes and didn't falter down the stretch as he posted a 1-under par 35 to close out his qualifying round. A total of 13 junior and six pre-junior qualifiers advanced at Mount Pleasant Golf Club.
Norfolk Golf Club
Leif Jacobsen (Milton, MA) was the only player to post a sub-par round and as a result he ran away with medalist honors at Norfolk Golf Club. Jacobsen carded a 1-under par 71, which featured a second nine-hole score of 3-under par 33. Also qualifying at that site were a pair of brothers – Nathan Belkin (Wellesley CC) and Michael Belkin (Wellesley CC), who both shot scores of 3-over par 75. Claiming the top spot in the Pre-Junior Division was Philippe Panico (The Harmon Club) with a score of 1-over par 73.
Round Hill Golf Links
D.K. Law (Acoaxet Club) beat Grant Simon (Dennis Highlands GC) by one stroke in South Dartmouth . Law posted a score of 2-over par 74, while Simon captured the second qualifying spot with a 3-over par 75. Those two players were two of 13 Junior and 2 Pre-Junior qualifiers from that site.
Wyantenuck Country Club
Spencer Akers (Wyantenuck CC) used his home-course knowledge to secure the top spot in Great Barrington. Akers turned in a scorecard of 5-over par 75 to best Dante Reynolds (The Ranch GC) by three strokes. Another home-course player who qualified at that site was Cody Riva (Wyantenuck CC). Taking top honors in the Pre-Junior division was Dan Fanion (The Ranch GC) with a score of 7-over par 77.
Massachusetts Junior Championship – Qualifying Notes:
• Due to the limited number of applications received for the Boys Division, all competitors who applied for entry in that division were automatically placed in the Championship Proper field.
• A total of 60 Junior, 40 Pre-Junior and 20 Boys Division competitors will take part in Championship Proper.
