Headline: 3 Advance to U.S. Junior Amateur Championship Following Local Qualifying

Devens, MA – A total of 62 players competed in a 36-hole qualifier at Red Tail Golf Club today in hopes of advancing to the 2006 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which will be held on July 17-22 at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California

Following the local qualifier three players advanced to the USGA Championship Proper. Leading the charge with a score of even par 144 was Peter Williamson (Hanover, NH). Williamson finished the morning session with a day-low 18-hole round score of 2-under par 70. He followed up that stellar performance with a 2-over par 74 in the afternoon.

Two strokes back of Williamson was Timothy Pawul (East Setauket, NY), who posted rounds of 2-over par 74 and even par 72 to earn a berth into the championship. The final qualifier – and the only player from Massachusetts to advance this afternoon – was Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, MA), who fired a qualifying score of 4-over par 148. Mullany, who plays out of Wyantenuck Country Club, is no stranger to the local junior golf circuit as he finished second at the 2005 Massachusetts Junior Championship.

About the Championship:
While it is not the oldest competition, the U.S. Junior Amateur is considered the premier junior competition, having been around since 1948. The event is open to male golfers who have not reached their 18th birthday prior to the close of competition and whose USGA Handicap Index does not exceed 6.4. The U.S. Junior is one of 13 national championship conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
