Headline: Starting Times & Pairings Released for 87th Massachusetts Junior Championship
Norton, MA – The 87th Massachusetts Junior Championship will be contested next week at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Massachusetts. The Championship will take place on August 1-3. As a prelude to the event, the MGA today released starting times for the first two days of the event.
The Massachusetts Junior Championship, the third oldest event on the MGA’s schedule, debuted in 1914 with Raymond Ouimet capturing the inaugural title at Oakley Country Club. Since that time the event has expanded to honor three divisions: Junior (<18 years old), Pre-Junior (14-16 years old) and Boys (<14 years old).
This year’s 120-player field includes 60 Junior Division, 40 Pre-Junior Division and 20 Boys Division competitors who will play 18 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday. Following the first two rounds of stroke play, the low 30 Junior, 20 Pre-Junior and 10 Boys Division scorers and ties will continue on to Wednesday’s 18-hole final round.
The title is up for grabs this year as last year’s champion, Peter Alminas (Elmcrest CC), turned 18 years old and is no longer eligible for the event. Looking to take over the role of champion will be last year’s third-place finisher John Shicko (Longmeadow CC) as well as the 2004 Pre-Junior champion John Kelly (Twin Hills CC), who moves into the Junior division this year.
In addition, a new Boys Division champion will be crowned as last year’s victor, Peter Eleey (Black Rock GC), will be competing in the Pre-Junior division.
