Headline: Eric Egloff Captures 2005 Massachusetts Open Championship Title at Vesper CC
Tyngsboro, MA – Eric Egloff (Sandy Spring, MD) captured his first New England victory of the season by winning the 2005 Massachusetts Open Championship on Wednesday afternoon at Vesper Country Club. Egloff, who competes on the Australasian and Cleveland Golf Tours, defeated local favorite Jim Salinetti (Lee, MA) on the sixth playoff hole after making birdie on the 526-yard, par 5 18th hole. With the victory, Egloff lays claim to the Clarence G. Cochrane Memorial Trophy and a winner’s check of $15,000.
After entering the third and final round in a tie for second place, Egloff and Salinetti battled each other and the course throughout the day en route to posting identical third-round scores of 1-under par 71. It was much of the same during the playoff as both players matched each other shot-for-shot …that is until they reached the 18 th hole for a second time and Egloff drained his birdie putt.
The 40-year old from Maryland is no stranger to nail-biting finishes as came in second at the Atkinson Country Club Open earlier this month, just one shot back of eventual winner Rob Oppenheim (Andover, MA). This time around, however, Egloff made sure that another victory didn’t slip through his fingers as he posted three straight rounds of under-par golf at Vesper Country Club over the three-day period.
Finishing in sole possession of third place was Michael Carbone (Brewster, MA), who posted a day low score of 5-under par 67 which featured four birdies and one eagle. His lone eagle came on the 18 th hole. Second-round leader Rodney Butcher (New Port Richey, FL) couldn’t maintain his slim one-stroke lead as he finished in a tie for fourth place with Matthew Donovan (Pittsfield, MA) and Geoff Sisk (Marshfield, MA) at 5-under par 211. On the day, Butcher registered four bogeys and two birdies. While Butcher struggled to find his early-round form, Donovan saved the best for last by posting a 4-under par 68 round-three score.
In the battle for low amateur honors, Tim Acquaviva (Andover CC) captured his first Commonwealth Cup with a final score of 4-under par 212. Despite playing with a broken hand all week long, Acquaviva persevered and was buoyed early in the final round with a spectacular eagle on the 480-yard, par 5th hole. He drained a 30-foot putt which put him at 5-under par for the tournament. After making the turn at 1-under, Acquaviva held on to post a final-round score of 1-under par 71. Acquaviva finished in a tie for 7th place overall and bested the next closest amateur competitor - Michael Welch (Furnace Brook GC) – by three strokes.
