Headline: 18 Competitors Advance During First Day of State Amateur Qualifying
Norton, MA – A total of 18 competitors earned the right to compete at the 97th playing of the Massachusetts Amateur Championship this afternoon following qualifying rounds which were held at Ludlow Country Club and Tatnuck Country Club.
Leading the charge in Worcester at Tatnuck CC were Daniel Gale (Bedrock GC) and Bruce Carter (Ponkapoag GC), who posted low rounds of 1-over par 71.
Meanwhile in the western part of the state, two youngsters and a veteran played spectacular golf en route to capturing medalist honors at Ludlow CC. Steven Alminas (Elmcrest CC), fresh off last month's victory at the Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship with brother Peter, Adam Rainaud (The Ledges GC) and Jack Kearney (Elmcrest CC) all posted low scores of 2-under par 70. Rainaud, a sophomore at the University of Louisville who hails from South Hadley, finished in a tie for second place at the 2004 Massachusetts Public Links Championship.
While Alminas and Rainaud are relative newcomers to the MGA scene, Kearney is a seasoned veteran. The 1992 MGA Player of the Year, Kearney has competed in numerous MGA and USGA events throughout the past 20 years. Also qualifying at that site was the 1993 Massachusetts Amateur Champion Flynt Lincoln (Longmeadow CC).
