Headline: Paul Quigley Captures 2004 New England Senior Championship Title by Four Strokes

Barrington, RI – Although frost delayed the start of today’s final round of the New England Senior Championship at Rhode Island Country Club, Paul Quigley (Triggs Memorial - RI) didn’t let such adversity get in his way as he captured the prestigious title with a final score of 2-over par 144. Quigley fired a second-round score of even par 71 to capture the title by four strokes over second-place finishers Thomas Goryl (Wannamoisett - RI) and Shawn McLoughlin (Ridgewood CC - CT).

This year marks the first time that the 59-year-old Quigley, a three-time RIGA Player of the Year and Rhode Island Golf Association Hall of Fame inductee, has ever won this event and the first time in 21 years that a Rhode Island player has captured an NEGA title. The last Rhode Island competitor to win an NEGA event was Billy Andrade, who was victorious at the 1983 New England Amateur Championship.

Quigley entered the final round of this tournament in a tie for first with Bob Spaniotis (Wethersfield CC - CT) and did most of his damage during the early stages of his round. Quigley posted four birdies and one bogey through his first nine holes. Although he couldn’t repeat his front nine magic on the backside – he registered no birdies and three bogeys through his final nine scores – Quigley was able to cruise into the clubhouse with a comfortable lead and his first NEGA title.

While Quigley was able to continue his stellar play and jump out to a commanding lead as the day wore on, Spaniotis was unable to catch his competitor as he registered a two-day total of 7-over par 149 to finish in a tie for fourth place with Jim Holbrook (Indian Ridge CC – MA), the top Massachusetts finisher. Of note, Goryl and McLoughlin landed in a tie for second-place after the players posted identical scores of 75 on Tuesday and 73 on Wednesday.

Don Anderson (Kittansett Club - MA), who last week captured the Massachusetts Senior Championship at Sankaty Head Golf Club, was unable to catch Quigley. Anderson posted a final score of 8-over par 150 for sole possession of sixth place.

Day 2 Highlights:
- The only players to score even par this week at Rhode Island Country Club were Quigley and Holbrook, who both posted scores of even par 71 on Thursday.
- Tom Martin (TPC of Boston - MA), who won this event last year in a four-person playoff, was unable to defend his title as he finished with a two-day total of 20-over par 162. Martin’s golf season will continue, however, as he is scheduled to compete for Team Massachusetts in next week’s Tri-State Matches, which will be held at Carnegie Abbey in Portsmouth, RI.
