Headline: Paul Quigley & Bob Spaniotis Lead Field at 2004 New England Senior Championship

Barrington, RI – The weather was cool and the scores were high, but two players managed to stand out among the pack. Leading the way following the first round of play at the New England Senior Championship are Paul Quigley (Triggs Memorial - RI) and Bob Spaniotis (Wethersfield CC - CT) with scores of 2-over par 73. This year’s event is being held at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, RI.

After posting three bogeys and one birdie through his first 10 holes, Quigley found his groove and posted eight straight pars to cap off his solid first round. Meanwhile, Spaniotis endured a more up-and-down round. Spaniotis was 2-under par through five holes before he suffered a double bogey on the 296-yard, par 6th hole and then a bogey on the 433-yard, par 4 7th hole. He recovered quickly with a birdie on the 502-yard, par 5 8th hole to make the turn at even par 36. Down the stretch Spaniotis posted three bogeys and one birdie to finish at 2-over par for the round.

Quigley, older brother of Dana Quigley, has enjoyed a spectacular amateur golf career in Rhode Island. His impressive golf resume includes three victories in the Rhode Island Amateur, two in the Four-Ball, one in the Mid-Amateur and one in the Senior Championship. Quigley, a three-time RIGA Player of the Year, was one of 16 inaugural inductees into the Rhode Island Golf Hall of Fame.

Standing just one shot back of the leaders at 3-over par 74 is Don Anderson (Kittansett Club - MA), who just last week captured the Massachusetts Senior Championship at Sankaty Head Golf Club. Anderson posted identical 37s on the front and back nines. Three players – Thomas Goryl (Wannamoisett - RI), James Logue (Salem CC - MA) and Shawn McLoughlin (Ridgewood CC - CT) – are currently tied for fourth place at 4-over par 75.

Following the first round of play, the field was repaired according to score. All players are scheduled to return to Rhode Island Country Club on Wednesday for a final round of 18 holes stroke play.

Day 1 Highlights:
- Defending champion Tom Martin (TPC of Boston - MA), who won this event last year in a four-person playoff, struggled this afternoon as he finished with a score of 14-over par 85. Martin posted four double bogeys, seven bogeys and one birdie on the day.
- Missing from today’s field are five familiar names on the senior amateur circuit - Tom Bergeron (Crumpin-Fox Club), Joseph Keller (Oyster Harbors Club), Edward Fletcher (Quashnet Valley CC), Jim Ruschioni (Oak Hill CC) and Dave Houghton (The Captains GC). Those five Massachusetts players will be competing in the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, which will be held on October 9-14 at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, CA.
