Headline: Don Anderson Captures 2004 Massachusetts Senior Championship by Seven Strokes
Siasconset, MA – Don Anderson (The Kittansett Club) entered the final round of the Massachusetts Senior Championship with a four-stroke cushion. It turns out he didn’t need it. The Marion resident – who entering this week had never won an MGA Championship event – continued his stellar play on Friday afternoon en route to capturing the Massachusetts Senior Championship title at Sankaty Head Golf Club with a final score of 7-under par 137.
Anderson entered the final round with a four-stroke lead over the field after firing a 5-under par 67 on Thursday, and he did not relent down the stretch. Playing under unusually calm conditions, he posted five birdies and three bogies on Friday for a day-low score of 2-under par 70. Anderson took control of his round early by making birdie on the 496-yard, par 5 4th hole (that made up for a bogey on the previous hole) and then three consecutive birdies on the 6th, 7th and 8th holes. He finished off his round with a birdie on the 10th hole and then two bogies on the 12th and 15th holes. Anderson’s victory today is even more extraordinary considering that just one year ago he finished in a tie for 37th place in this event after posting rounds of 83 and 81. Last year’s event was held at Brae Burn Country Club.
Claiming sole possession of second place with a score of even par 144 was Tom Martin (TPC of Boston), who capped off his round with a 1-over par 73. Martin, who will be defending his New England Senior Championship title next week at Rhode Island Country Club, also captured a victory today in the Super Senior Division, which recognizes the low scorer in the over 65 age group.
Finishing in a two-way tie for third place were Joe Keller (Oyster Harbors Club) and Ken Diskin (Stow Acres CC) with scores of 3-over par 147. Keller moved up the leader board with a final round score of even par 72.
Highlights From Day 2:
? Posting the most interesting round of the day was three-time champion of
this event Ed Fletcher (Quashnet Valley CC), who finished with a score of
6-over par 150. On the final day, he registered six birdies, four bogies and
one triple bogey for a 1-over par 73. Fletcher was victorious in this event
in 2000-2003.
? Four competitors from today’s event will now set their sights on the
U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, which will be held on October 9-14 at Bel-Air
Country Club in Los Angeles, CA. Tom Bergeron (Crumpin-Fox Club), Keller,
Fletcher and Dave Houghton (The Captains GC) advanced to the USGA Championship
following local qualifying held earlier this month.
