Headline: Don Anderson Shoots 5-under par 67 for Lead at Massachusetts Senior Championship

Siasconset, MA – Don Anderson (The Kittansett Club) had one of those days. The Kittansett Club member found his rhythm early en route to firing a 5-under par 67 for a four-stroke lead over the field following the first round of play at the Massachusetts Senior Championship, which is being held this week at Sankaty Head Golf Club.

Anderson, who last year finished in a tie for 37th place at this event, posted seven birdies and two bogies on the day. After making the turn at 1-under par 35, Anderson made his move. He made back-to-back birdies on the 434-yard, par 4 10th and 481-yard, par 5 11th holes and then followed that up with three more birdies on the 13th, 15th and 17th holes. The only blemishes on Anderson’s scorecard were bogies on the 7th and 14th holes. Both bogies were the result of three putts, which further demonstrate just how dominating Anderson was this afternoon.

Four strokes back of Anderson sit three players – Joseph Monahan (Winchester CC), Tom Bergeron (Crumpin-Fox Club) and Tom Martin (TPC of Boston) – who posted 1-under par 71. While both Monahan and Martin posted identical splits of 37 and 34 on the day, Bergeron showed true affection for the back nine by making five birdies and one bogey for a score of 4-under par 32. In addition to vying for the overall State Senior title, Martin also has a chance to score a victory in the Super Senior Division, which recognizes the top player in the over 65 age group. Two Super Senior competitors fired 4-over par 76s and are currently five strokes back of Martin in that division.

The entire field will return to Sankaty Head Golf Club on Friday to compete in a second and final round of 18-hole stroke play. Following the first round, the field was re-paired according to score. The leaders will tee off on the 1st tee at 12:45 p.m.

Highlights From Day 1:
- Defending champion James Drohen (Crystal Springs GC) is eight strokes back of the leader after registering a 3-over par 75.
- Four competitors from today’s event will soon be setting their sights on the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, which will be held on October 9-14 at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, CA. Bergeron, Joseph Keller (Oyster Harbors Club), Edward Fletcher (Quashnet Valley CC) and Dave Houghton (The Captains GC) advanced to the USGA Championship following local qualifying held earlier this month.
