Headline: Andy Drohen Is Victor at Rain-Shortened Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship
Canton, MA – Andy Drohen (St. Anne CC) was named champion of the 2004 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship after the final two rounds of the event were cancelled on Wednesday due to rain at Blue Hill Country Club in Canton.
Rain forced the suspension of play on Tuesday, and it was much of the same on a rain-drenched Wednesday morning. Citing unplayable conditions, the committee officially announced the end of the tournament at 7:50 a.m.
This marks the first Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship for Drohen, who fired a 4-under par 68 on Monday. Drohen, whose sole championship win in 2004 prior to this week came at the Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship, started his round on Monday on the 10th hole and made the turn at even par 36. It was then when he turned on the heat. Posting four birdies and zero bogies (including back-to-back birdies on the 198 yard, par 3 4th and the 389-yard, par 4 5th holes) through his final nine holes, Drohen finished at 4-under par 32.
That day-low score was one better than John Hadges (Thorny Lea GC), and as it turns out, was good enough for Drohen's third MGA championship victory. In addition to the 2004 State Four-Ball, Drohen was also victorious at the 2003 State Amateur Championship. Finishing in sole possession of third place was Bill Drohen (Bradford CC) with a score of 2-under par 70.
