Headline: 15 Golfers Advance Following Day 2 of Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Qualifying
Norton, MA – Despite inclement weather that threatened the area all day long, the second of three days of qualifying for the 2004 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship was held today at Norton Country Club. A total of 15 golfers earned a qualifying spot following the 18-hole round.
Leading the charge as medalist was Derek Johnson (Highland CC), who was the only player to post a round of even par 71. After making the turn at even par 36, Johnson continued his momentum down the stretch to finish the back nine at even par 35. Two strokes back of Johnson was Jim Skeele (Dedham C&PC) with a score of 2-over par 73.
One host club member – Ned Sweeney (Norton CC) – managed to secure a qualifying spot courtesy of a 4-over par 75 round. Another familiar competitor at that site was John Geraci (Charles River CC), who earlier this year advanced to match play at the Massachusetts Amateur Championship. Geraci finished with a score of 6-over par 77 to claim one of the final spots.
These individuals – along with the 70 competitors who advanced at yesterday’s qualifying – have earned the right to take part in the Championship Proper, which is scheduled for September 27-29 at Blue Hill Country Club.
The third and final two day of qualifying will be held on Thursday at Fall
River CC.
