Headline: Host of Players Advance to State Mid-Amateur Championship at Day 1 of Qualifying
Norton, MA – A host of individuals earned the right to compete in the 2004 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship this afternoon at qualifying rounds which were held at four sites – Chicopee CC, Far Corner GC, Olde Barnstable GC and Shaker Hills GC. As a result of their performance today, these qualifiers will advance to the Championship, which is scheduled for September 27-29 at Blue Hill Country Club.
The final two days of qualifying will be held on Wednesday at Norton CC and
on Thursday at Fall River CC.
Here are highlights from today’s qualifying rounds:
Chicopee CC:
David Laravee (Ludlow CC) was the only player to shoot under par as he captured
sole possession of medalist honors with a score of 1-under par 70. Another
notable qualifier was two-time Massachusetts Four-Ball champion, Carter Fasick
(Indian Meadows GC), who qualified this afternoon with a 1-over par 72.
Olde Barnstable GC:
Brett Gough (Pinehills GC) and Whitney Trimble (Olde Barnstable GC) both fired
scores of even par 71 to gain top honors at Olde Barnstable GC. One of the
20 qualifiers at that site was Mike Dunham (The Ridge Club), who serves as
starting goaltender for the New York Rangers during the winter months.
Far Corner GC:
Scott Sagan (Kernwood CC) turned in a score of 1-under par 71 to top the field
in West Boxford. Another notable qualifier from that site was Charlie Johnson
(Ferncroft CC), who earlier this year advanced to the first round of match
play at the Massachusetts Amateur Championship.
Shaker Hills GC:
David Marseglia (Sterling CC) just barely claimed medalist honors following
a 1-over par 72 score at the Harvard site. Finishing just one stroke back
of Marseglia was Andy Berman (The International). A total of 20 qualifiers
advanced at that site.
