Headline: Moseley Holds 2-Stroke Lead Heading Into Final Round of State Junior Championship
Great Barrington, MA – Nick Moseley (Myopia Hunt Club) leaped into the lead of the 86th Massachusetts Junior Championship today courtesy of a second-round score of 2-under par 68. Moseley, who heads into Wednesday’s final round with a two-stroke lead over Peter Alminas (Elmcrest CC), finished with a two-day total of 1-under par 139. Moseley was the only player to finish under par through the first two days of the event, which is being held this year at Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington.
Moseley began his stellar round with a birdie on his first hole. Although he gave one right back with a bogey on the challenging 246-yard, par 3 2nd hole, Moseley battled back by making two birdies and zero bogies through his final 16 holes to finish at 2-under for the round. Another player who made a move on day two was Alminas who fired a score of 1-under par 69. Following a front-nine where he posted two bogies, Alminas made his move by making birdie on three of his next four holes. He finished with a flurry of pars to cap off a tremendous second round.
The 2002 champion of this event, Mark Purrington (CC of New Bedford), is currently four strokes back of the leader at 3-over par 143 and in fourth place overall. Jay Driscoll (Wollaston GC) is one stroke ahead of Purrington.
First-round leader Liam Billard (Wyantenuck CC) couldn’t repeat his spectacular round one score of 1-under par 69 as he made only one birdie and posted seven bogeys and one double bogey this afternoon en route to a second-day score of 8-over par 78 and a two-day total of 7-over par 147. The costly double bogey came on the 487-yard, par 5 8th hole and dropped him to second place in the Pre-Junior Division behind John Kelly (Twin Hills CC), who fired 3-over par 73 for a second straight day for a two-day total of 6-over par 146. Kelly made the turn at 1-over par 36 and then made two bogeys and one birdie – on the 389-yard, par 4 15th hole – to finish out his round and secure himself a spot in Wednesday’s final.
Following play on Tuesday, the 120-player field was reduced to 65 players, which represents the low 30 Junior, 20 Pre-Junior and 10 Boys Division scorers and ties. Those players will return to Wyantenuck Country Club on Wednesday for a final round of 18-hole stroke play.
Highlights from the Boys Division:
- Peter Eleey, Jr. (Black Rock CC) powered to the top of leaderboard following
a second round score of 5-over par 75. Eleey, who posted a 10-over par 80
on Monday, leads the Boys Division by four strokes with a two-day total of
15-over par 155. Bradley Kushner (CC of New Seabury) remained in second place
for a second straight day. He enters the final round at 19-over par 159. First-round
leader Noah Walker (The Harmon Club) is six shots back and in a tie with Brad
Cadigan (South Shore CC) at 21-over par 161.
