Headline: Jon Curran Advances to Semifinals of 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship
Norton, MA – Local amtaeur player Jon Curran (Hopkinton, MA) further proved himself as one of the best junior players in the country as he advanced to the semifinals of the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which was held this past week at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA.
Curran, who at 17 years of age currently is eighth in GolfWeek's Junior Boys Rankings, defeated Juan Pablo Candela of Colombia, 2 up, in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals and earn a matchup with eventual champion Sihwan Kim.
In their semifinal match, the Korean-born Kim, who is only 15 years old, never trailed in his semifinal match but needed wins on holes 14 and 15 to pull away for a 3 & 2 win over Curran.
Prior to his semifinal defeat to Kim, Currran won three of four holes with pars to take a 3-up advantage through 12 holes on Candela before escaping with a 2 Up win.
Curran finished the stroke play portion of the event with a score of 9-over par 152 and advanced to Match Play following a 12-for-10 playoff.
