Headline: 44 Players Advance to Massachusetts Amateur Championship at Day 4 of Qualifying

Norton, MA – A host of individuals earned the right to compete in the 2004 Massachusetts Amateur Championship this afternoon at qualifying rounds which were held at four sites – Bass Rocks GC, CC of New Bedford, Pine Brook CC and Wampatuck CC. As a result of their performance today, a total of 44 qualifiers advanced to the Championship, which is scheduled for July 12-16 at Taconic Golf Club.

Here are highlights from today’s qualifying rounds:

Bass Rocks GC:
Bradford Tufts (Tedesco CC) and Chris Brown (Essex CC) fired low scores of 1-under par 68 to lead a field of 11 qualifiers. Shawn Roderick (Haverhill CC), who has advanced to match play at the State Amateur Championship the past two years, qualified with a score of 1-over par 70.

CC of New Bedford:
Bruce Barboza (Elmwood GA) had no trouble dominating the field and course in North Dartmouth as his score of 3-under par 67 was five shots better than second-place finisher John Bender (Salem CC). Eleven competitors advanced at that site.

Pine Brook CC:
Competing in the biggest field of the day [92 players], Daniel Head (Wellesley CC) and Bill McInerney (Charles River CC) earned medalist honors by shooting 1-under par 71. Two-time State Amateur Champion Steve Tasho (Thorny Lea GC) also qualified with a score of 3-over par 75.

Wampatuck CC:
Brian O'Leary (Ponkapoag GC) was the only player to shoot under par as he captured sole possession of medalist honors with a score of 1-under par 71. Another notable qualifier was the 1985 New England Amateur Champion, Bruce Chalas (Pinecrest GC), who qualified this afternoon with a 2-over par 74.

The final two days of qualifying will be held on Tuesday at Crumpin-Fox Club and Wahconah CC and on Wednesday at Cummaquid GC and Franklin CC.
