Headline: Horowitz, Fecteau Finish as Medalists on Fourth Day of Massachusetts Open Qualifying
Norton, MA – Following the final round of qualifying at two sites today – Poquoy Brook Golf Club and The Georgetown Club – the field of 150 players is now set for the 2004 Massachusetts Open Championship. A total of 37 qualifiers advanced to the Championship following today’s fourth and final day of qualifying.
Leading the charge at The Georgetown Club was Joseph Horowitz (Long Beach, NY) with a low score of 3-under par 69. Horowitz edged local professional Webb Heintzelman (Thomson CC) by one stroke for top honors. The low amateur at the North Shore site was Phil Miceli (Sagamore Spring GC), who shot even par 72 for a share of third place. In total, 11 of the 17 qualifiers at The Georgetown Club were amateurs, which represent a 2004 record for Massachusetts Open qualifying.
At Poquoy Brook GC, Philip Fecteau (Firefly GC) pieced together a spectacular 4-under par 68 round to capture medalist honors by a two-stroke margin. Fecteau fired a front nine score of 3-under par 33 en route to his low score of 68. Finishing second at 2-under par 70 was Matt Doyle (W. Simsbury, CT). R.D. Haskell (The Country Club), son of longtime MGA Executive Director Richard Haskell, was low amateur with a score of 1-over par 73. In total, 20 competitors advanced from the Poquoy Brook GC site.
The Massachusetts Open represents the only event on the MGA Championship
schedule that is open to both amateur and professional golfers. Competitors
for this year’s event must have an up-to-date MGA/USGA Handicap Index
not exceeding 2.4.
Massachusetts Open Qualifying - Day 4 Notes
• During the first three days of qualifying held last week,
a total of 69 golfers advanced to the Championship.
• More than 500 applications, including 45 exemptions, were received
for this year’s Massachusetts Open.
