For Immediate Release: May 20, 2002

James Driscoll (Brookline, MA), a former Massachusetts amateur standout and a fully-exempt member of the Canadian Tour, shot 2-under par 70 this afternoon to earn medalist honors at U.S. Open Local Qualifying that was held at Ipswich Country Club. The 2001 Walker Cup Team Member and 2000 U.S. Amateur Runner-Up bested second-place qualifier and last year's Massachusetts Open Champion Rich Parker (Lebanon, NH) by one shot. Parker finished his qualifying round at 1-under 71.

Also qualifying with a score of even par 72 at Ipswich CC were Christian Vander Velde (Norwich, CT), Frank Dully II (Salem, MA), Kirk Hanefeld (Westford, MA) and Travis Hall (Marblehead, MA).

Local qualifying also took place today on the other side of the state - at Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Massachusetts. William Hadden, an amateur golfer out of South Londonderry, VT, shot 2-under par 69 en route to medalist honors at that site. Hadden, who was 3-under 32 on the front nine, edged Jonathan Brisbane (Rutland, VT) and two-time Massachusetts Junior champion (1971, 1972) Rick Karbowski (Worcester, MA) by one shot.

Ron Philo (Waterbury Center, VT) and Bill Rosenblum (Ludlow, MA) played even par golf and finished as the top two alternates. Local amateur Larry Nuger (Longmeadow, MA), a recent graduate of the University of Illinois, and Matthew Donovan (Pittsfield, MA) filled out the field of four alternates at the Taconic GC site.

The nine qualifiers from today's action have earned the right to advance to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying, which will take place on June 3-4.
