For Immediate Release: August 16, 2001

The team of Ed Fletcher and Jack Maher shot a 3-under 68 today to capture the Massachusetts Senior Four-Ball Championship held at Sterling CC. The duo held a one-stroke lead after posting a 4-under 67 on Wednesday afternoon. Thanks to three early birdies by Fletcher, the team held on for a two-stroke victory over Burton Page & Walter Sharis and Fan Gaudette & Don MacLeod, who finished at 4-under 137 for the event.

This is Fletcher's third career Massachusetts Senior Four-Ball Championship title and his first with Maher. Fletcher won this championship in 1997 and 1998 with Fordie Pitts. Pitts partnered with Bernard Lynch this year and finished in a five-way tie for fourth with a score of 2-under 139.

Fred Walker & Robert Coffey -- 2000 Massachusetts Senior Four-Ball champions -- were in second place heading into the final day but struggled on the course this morning with a 1-over 72. The defending champions finished in an eight-way tie for 9th place.

The 72-team field competed in two rounds of play with shotgun starts on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.
