For Immediate Release: August 15, 2001

The six-player team from Massachusetts finished just one stroke back of Connecticut at the New England Junior Championship held on Tuesday and Wednesday at CC of Waterbury in Connecticut. The six Bay State junior players -- Kevin Silva, Tim Acquaviva, Evan Hahn, Sam Chud, George Zolotus and Brendan Ray -- finished with a team total of 905. Connecticut claimed first place with a 904.

Kevin Silva, quarterfinalist at last month's U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, was crowned the individual champion after shooting a 9-over 216 for the event. Silva shot an even-69 on his second round to seal the seven-stroke victory over Connecticut's Hisaki Kobayashi. Chud's 1-under 68 on the final day was the low round of the championship.

The Massachusetts team posted the low score for two of the three rounds and even held a slim one-stroke lead over the field following Round 1, but Connecticut stormed in front with a championship-best of 297 in the second round and never looked back. Connecticut was the only team that had all six players finish sub-240 for the championship.
