News Release
For Immediate Release: August 10, 1999
The Massachusetts Golf Association, Boston Parks and Recreation
Department and Sterling Management have teamed up again to offer approximately
600 Boston youth a 5 day inner city golf camp. This program is sponsored by
BankBoston and is recognized by Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
The participants in this program will meet all week, starting Aug 9 and going through August 13 from 9:00 am to 12 noon. The goal of the program is to not only provide golf instruction but to reinforce the virtues of self discipline, integrity and sportsmanship.
On Friday, August 13, the children will be watching a golf video produced by the United States Golf Association on the virtues of self discipline, integrity and sportsmanship called the "Spirit of the Game." This is a new component to the Inner City Golf Camp and we hope that it will have a lasting impact.
Additionally, all participants will receive a rules of golf book compliments of the Massachusetts Golf Association. Immediately following the video, the children will have a chance to compete against one another. Contests run focus on chipping and putting. Prizes will be awarded accordingly.
Lastly, there will be a four hole exhibition match and clinic involving a New England PGA golf professional and four of Massachusetts' top junior golfers; Mike Carbone (1998 MGA Junior Player of the year and 1998 MGA Junior Champion), Adam Carlucci, Derek Adams and Hans Sherman. The NEPGA professional has yet to me named. This exhibition match will allow the youngsters who have participated in the camp all week to see how they should conduct themselves on the golf course. With luck, they will also get to see how to play the game at the top Amateur level.
We are inviting the media to come out to Franklin Park Golf Course on Friday, August 13 at 10:00 am to be a part of this unique event. We feel that it will reach out to the youngsters in a way we have not yet explored.
