Headline: First of Four Massachusetts Senior Amateur Qualifiers Held at Springfield Country Club; Sevent Competitors Advance to Championship Proper

Springfield CC hosted the first of four Massachusetts Senior Amateur qualifiers on August 8.

Springfield, MA — Another MGA Championship Proper got underway on Tuesday as nearly 50 competitors took to the links at Springfield Country Club, eyeing a spot in next month’s Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship, taking place at Watertown’s Oakley Country Club on September 18-19.

At the completion of play, seven competitors who shot between 5-over par 77 and 8-over par 80 earned the right to compete in the Championship Proper, taking place for the 57th time dating back to the inaugural tournament in 1961. This year’s MGA Senior Amateur Championship will be the second held at Oakley Country Club after the 1987 Championship Proper, won by John Gargalianos, was also held at the club.

Entries are open to amateur golfers who have reached their 55th birthday by September 18, 2017 and who have an active MGA/GHIN Handicap Index at any public, private, semi-private, municipal or non-real estate MGA member course/club not exceeding 8.0 (as determined by the July 1, 2017 Handicap Revision) or have completed their handicap certification.

In addition to the seven competitors who qualified, an additional four competitors who shot 9-over par 81, or one stroke more than the final qualifying spot, were added to the alternate list per the alternate policy, which can be found on the MGA Policy and Procedures webpage.

Three more Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship qualifiers will be held across the Bay State until the end of the month. Play will resume on August 15 at Pine Brook Country Club before additional rounds are held at Willowbend (Bay/Bog) on August 21 and at Marshfield Country Club on August 28.
