Headline: Three-time MGA Amateur Public Links Champion Bill Drohen Will Return to Championship Proper; Claimed Medalist Honors at Bradford CC Qualifier

For Immediate Release: June 29, 2017

The fifth day of MGA Amateur Public Links Qualifying was held on June 29 at Bradford CC.

Haverhill, MA — On the last day of qualifying before the July 4th holiday break, 18 competitors now have extra reason to celebrate as they qualified for the 2017 Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship on Thursday at Bradford Country Club.

Thursday’s qualifier marked the fifth of six on the MGA calendar and following Thursday’s round, August’s Championship Proper field at Pinehills Golf Club is beginning to take shape with 91 having earned their chance to compete for an Massachusetts Golf Association APL title dating back to June 20.

Hosting its third MGA Amateur Public Links Championship qualifier in five years, the course saw the likes of Bill Drohen (Brookmeadow CC) take the top spot to earn medalist honors and advance to the Championship Proper, scheduled for August 8-9.

The 44-year old Drohen, of North Easton, carded a 3-under par 66 for the day, courtesy of four birdies, 13 pars and one bogey, a mark that came on the 488-yard par-5 eighth hole, the second longest hole on the Haverhill course. His 3-under par mark is second best amongst all qualifiers from the 2017 Massachusetts Amateur Public Links qualifying season.

Drohen is no stranger to this event as he captured the title in 2004, 2006 and 2007. He stands as one of only two competitors to have claimed three Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship titles. Steve St. Amand won the championship in 1989, 1990 and 1993.

Scores from Thursday’s Massachusetts Amateur Public Links qualifier that featured scores that ranged from 3-under par 66 to 8-over 77. An additional two competitors, who shot 9-over par 78, were named alternates and will be added to the alternate list. They will be placed on the alternate list per the alternate policy that is available on the MGA Policies and Procedures Page.

The Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship is the only MGA Championship Proper that annually accepts the entries of only those competitors who are amateur golfers and are bona fide public course players at a public MGA member club (a course/club that provides playing opportunities for the general public seven days a week).
