David Spitz (above) was medalist at an MGA Amateur qualifier held at Presidents GC on June 21.

Quincy, MA — The final selection of participants for the 109th playing of the Massachusetts Amateur Championship were determined on Wednesday as 14 golfers advanced from Presidents Golf Course, the 10th and final local qualifier for the 2017 MGA Amateur Championship.

What started back on May 30 at Bear Hill GC and Townsend Ridge CC, respectively, has now seen 109 competitors fill the Championship field in addition to the previously exempt players and an undetermined number of alternates that will be decided at a later date.

Wednesday top score on a course that overlooks the city of Boston from its peak atop the hills of Quincy came courtesy of local golfer David Spitz (South Shore CC), who carded a 4-under par 66 to take the medalist honors.

His score of 4-under par 66 ties as the second lowest amongst the MGA’s 10 Massachusetts Amateur Championship qualifiers with Alejandro Soto (Blue Hill CC), who had a matching score on Tuesday at CC of Wilbraham.

The Massachusetts Amateur Championship Proper is taking place from July 10-14 at Charles River Country Club in Newton Centre. The annual five-day tournament will begin with stroke play on July 10-11 before the top 32 in the field move on to three days of match play, concluding with a 36-hole contest with the remaining two players to crown the 2017 champion.

An additional seven players who shot a 3-over par 73 were listed as alternates and will be placed on the priority list per the Alternate Policy which can be found on the MGA Policies and Procedures Page.
