Headline: 29 Competitors Advance to Massachusetts Amateur Championship Following an 18-Hole Qualifier at Hatherly CC

Day 2 of MGA Amateur Qualifying was held on May 31 at Hatherly CC.

Scituate, MA — On the second day of qualifying for the 109th playing of the Massachusetts Amateur Championship, 15 more competitors punched their ticket to the big dance following the 18-hole qualifier at Scituate’s Hatherly Country Club on Wednesday.

In total 29 players have now advanced from the qualifying stage to compete in the Massachusetts Amateur Championship Proper, which is taking place from July 1-14 at Charles River Country Club in Newton Centre.

The annual five-day tournament will begin with stroke play on July 10-11 before the top 32 in the field move on to three days of match play, concluding with a 36-hole contest with the remaining two players to crown the 2017 champion.

The scores for Wednesday’s round ranged from 2-under par 68 to 4-over par 74, while an additional nine players who carded a 5-over par 75, or one stroke more than the last qualifier, were named alternates and will be placed on the priority list per the Alternate Policy, which can be found on the MGA Policies and Procedures page at mgalinks.org.

NOTES:
Hatherly Country Club is home to golf professional Chip Johnson, who just last week qualified for the 2017 US Senior Open Championship when he carded an 18-hole score of 3-under par 67 to earn medalist honors at Kernwood Country Club in Salem.  

Hugh Lagrotteria became only the fourth golfer this season to qualify for an MGA Championship from their home course, and the first since Edward Montone placed T5 at the May 22 Massachusetts Open Championship qualifier held at his home club, Tedesco CC, in Marblehead.

Wednesday qualifier Brendan Monahan of Winchester CC is the brother of newly appointed PGA Tour Commissioner, Jay Monahan.

Seven more Massachusetts Amateur qualifiers will be held over the next three weeks. Scheduled qualifying sites include William J. Devine GC (June 1), Willowbend (June 5), Indian Ridge CC (June 7), Waubeeka GL (June 7), Marlborough CC), CC of Wilbraham (June 20) and the finale on June 21 at Presidents GC in Quincy.
