Headline: Robert Avellino Leads a Field of 11 Golfers Who Qualify at Bellevue GC for 2016 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship

Melrose, MA — Bradford Country Club’s Robert Avellino shot a 1-over par 71 on Monday to lead the field of 11 golfers to qualify for the Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship, scheduled for Golf Club at Turner Hill on September 12-13.

Avellino registered four birdies on the front nine and used that performance to overcome a tough back nine to bring himself to the top of the leaderboard at Bellevue Golf Club.

Avellino opened play by making par on the first hole and birdying the second, a 339 yard par -4. From there, he birdied the fifth, seventh and ninth holes to make the turn at 3-under par-35.

In the second half of his round of 18, he mixed six pars with a pair of bogeys and a double to finish his round at 1-over 71 on the Donald Ross classic located off the Lynn Fells Parkway.

Doug Bray (Granite Links GC) and Jack Bichajian (Ipswich CC)shot 2-over and 3-over par, respectively, to round out the top three scorers.

Three players tied for fourth having shot a 6-over 76 while five players tied for seventh after carding 77’s to complete the day.  

Per the MGA Alternate Policy, three players were added to the alternate list after carding an 8-over par 78 Monday.

Three additional qualifiers will be held ahead of the Championship Proper at Brookmeadow CC (August 9), Acushnet River Valley GC (August 18) and at Veterans Memorial GC (August 24).
