For Immediate Release: July 6, 2016

Gannon Municipal GC (top) and Holden Hills CC hosted MGA APL qualifiers on July 6.

Norton, MA —The final two qualifiers for the 2016 MGA Amateur Public Links Championship were held Wednesday, with 29 golfers making the cut and adding their names to the list of competitors who will play for the 2016 MGA APL title on August 7-8 at Waubeeka Golf Links.

At Holden Hills Country Club, Terry Dunn (Holden Hills CC) posted a score of 2-over par 73 on his home course to lead the field of 14 golfers who shot 8-over par-79 or lower to qualify for the Championship Proper.  Dunn, one of three players who hold membership at Holden Hills to have qualified for the MGA APL on Wednesday, registered two birdies and 13 pars on the day.

He finished one stroke ahead of fellow Holden Hills member Stephen Larson (Holden Hills CC), who recorded two birdies on the William F. Mitchell designed course to finish second with a 3-over par 74 score.

At Gannon Municipal Golf Course in Lynn, the site of Wednesday’s second APL qualifier, it was another golfer with ties to the qualifying host site who claimed a spot in next month's Championship.

James Friedman (Gannon Municipial GC) turned in three birdies on the back nine and finished at 2-over par 72 on the afternoon. Only Benedict Hoeller (Brookline GC) shot a lower score, recording two birdies and 13 pars to finish a field best 1-over par 71.

In total, 15 players from the Gannon Municipal qualifier finished below the 7-over par 77 cut line to form the last spots in the MGA APL Public Links Championship.

For the first time in event history, the APL will be contested on a Sunday/Monday – from August 7-8 – instead of on a traditional pair of weekdays. This provides competitors a chance to enjoy the weekend in Williamstown. Waubeeka, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016 – is hosting the APL for the first time.

MGA Amateur Public Links Eligibility: Entries are open to amateur golfers who are bona fide public course players at a public MGA member club (a course/club that provides playing opportunities for the general public seven days a week) and maintain an up-to-date MGA/USGA GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 12.0 (as determined by the June 1, 2016 Handicap Revision).
