Norton, MA — On the first day of qualifiers for the Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship, 38 golfers punched their ticket to the main event, being held at Williamstown’s Waubeeka Golf Links on August 7-8.

Wednesday saw 22 golfers who competed at Ponkapoag Golf Course advance to Championship Proper while another 16 golfers at Hyannis Golf Club, the second APL qualifying site, also advanced.

Leading the pack of qualifiers in Hyannis was local Adam Trivilino (Hyannis GC), who recorded three birdies to finish first with a score of even-par 71. He began his day with a birdie on his first hole of the day - the 354-yard par-4 - before notching birdies on the 4th and 10th holes. He was one of two competitors from the host site to finish as co-medalists.

Jared Pane (Hyannis GC), Billy Van Stratum (Dennis Pines GC) and Kevin Carey (Dennis Pines GC) - all who were fresh off appearances in the U.S. Senior Open qualifier at Dennis Pines GC on Tuesday - finished at 1-over par 72 to finish tied for second.

In Canton, it was also a home-course competitor who finished with the low score of the day. Brendan Sweeney (Ponkapoag GC) posted a 3-over par 75 to lead the group of 22 at the Canton site Wednesday. Eric Daniels (Patriots GC) finished second with a 4-over par 76.

Seven alternates between the two sites were placed on a priority list per the Alternate Policy that can be found on the MGA Policies & Procedures page.

Four additional qualifier sites for the APL will be held over the span of the next seven days. Olde Scotland Links will host a qualifier on June 30, while Westover GC (July 5), Holden Hills GC (July 6) and Gannon Municipal GC (July 6) will also play host during that span.

For the first time in event history, the APL will be contested on a Sunday/Monday – from August 7-8 – instead of on a traditional pair of weekdays. This provides competitors a chance to enjoy the weekend in Williamstown. Waubeeka, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016 – is hosting the APL for the first time.
