Matt Parziale leads the way for Bay State golfers at the Northeast Amateur Invitational

Rumford, RI After posting an even par 69 in the opening round, Matt Parziale (Brockton, MA) posted a 1-over par 70 on Thursday and currently sits T39 with seven others while Jake Shuman (Needham, MA)is tied for 47th following the first 36 holes of the 55th Northeastern Amateur Invitational, which is being held this week at Wannamoisett Country Club.

Parziale made the turn at 2-over par after recording four bogies and two birdies. The 2015 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Champion was solid on the back nine as he made eight pars and one birdie - on the 383-yard, par 4 13th hole - to finish at 1-over par 70 for the day. Through his first 36 holes in Rumford, Parziale has made a total of six birdies and 23 pars.

Meanwhile, Shuman followed up his day-one score of 1-under par 68 score on Wednesday with a 3-over par 72 on Thursday. Starting on the 10th hole, the Needham native and member of the Duke University golf team recorded two birdies through his first nine holes to make the turn at 2- under par for the tournament. Shuman carded four bogies through his final nine holes.

Leading the way overall after posting two straight rounds of 4-under par 65 is Matt Gilchrest (Southlake, TX). The rising senior at Auburn University was a member of the 2015 All-SEC first-team and currently holds a two-stroke lead in Rumford over 16-year-old Noah Goodwin (Corinth, TX).

The field of 92 will play another 18 holes on Friday before the cut line is made for the top 50 players and ties. Friday’s rounds will begin at 7:30 a.m.
