Headline: Massachusetts Amateur Qualifying Continues; Glen Ellen CC and Bay Club at Mattapoisett Serve as Host Sites on June 7

Glen Ellen CC (above) and the Bay Club at Mattapoisett hosted MGA Amateur Qualifiers on June 7.

Norton, MA — With qualifying events for the 2016 Massachusetts Amateur Championship - scheduled to begin July 11 at Taconic Golf Club - in full swing, another 24 players made the cut Tuesday, all vying for the title as Bay State's top amateur.

At Glen Ellen CC, the first of two sites to host amateur action Tuesday, Alex Jeffers (Woodland GC) secured the top spot by recording three of his four birdies on the back nine to post a score of 2-under par 70. Jeffers lead a group of 12 qualifiers from that site.

Placing second in Millis was Benjamin Kelly (The Country Club), who carded three straight birdies on holes 12 through 14 en route to an even par 72 performance. Three golfers fired scores of 2-over par 74, four carded 3-over par 75 and a final three finished at 4-over par 76 to advance.

Down south at The Bay Club at Mattapoisett, three players grabbed hold of the top spot by firing scores of even par 71.

Timothy Umphrey (Tatnuck CC), Kevin Blaser (Segregansett CC) and Mike Powers (Cyprian Keyes GC) combined for a total of eight birdies to lead the pack of 12 players who advanced to Championship Proper.

Three players finished T4 (2-over par 73), three were T7 (3-over par 74) and an additional three ended their rounds tied for T10 (4-over par 75) to round out play at that qualifier.

Haverhill CC will host a qualifier on Thursday, June 9, before the final two Massachusetts Amateur qualifying events are held later this month to complete the field for the 2016 Championship Proper.
