Headline: Team Massachusetts Continues Its Domination; Captures 8th Straight Tri-State Matches at Lake of Isles Golf Course (CT)

For Immediate Release: October 7, 2011

Team Massachusetts captured its record 8th straight Tri-State Matches title at Lake of Isles Golf Course (below)

North Stonington, CT — A collection of the Bay State's top players came together and did something historic.

Team Massachusetts - made up of eight mid-amateurs and four senior amateurs - captured a record 8th consecutive Tri-State Matches title this week at Lake of Isles Golf Course in North Stonington (CT).

In its 78-year history, no other team has been able to claim that many titles in a row. In fact, Team Massachusetts broke the previous record of seven straight titles (set by Massachusetts) last year. Massachusetts has now won a total of 29 Tri-State Matches titles since its debut in 1928.

This time around, the names on the roster may have been slightly different but the result was the same. The 12-man team put on a display of domination during both the foursomes matches on Thursday and the singles matches on Friday. Team Massachusetts finished with 70½ points, which was 20 points better than Rhode Island and 29½ more than Connecticut.

The Bay State contingent held a 14½ lead heading into the singles matches and never looked back.

Leading the charge on day two was Chris Congdon (Foxborough CC), who won the maximum six points in his singles match. Congdon, who advanced to the Round of 32 at the 2011 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship and tied for low amateur at the 2011 Massachusetts Open Championship, was the team's overall top scorer with 12 points. One day earlier, he earned six points - along with partner Frank Vana, Jr. (Marlborough CC) - during the foursomes matches. He was the only player this year to win the maximum 12 points.

Also fueling Team Massachusetts' big victory on Friday by collecting five points each were Brian Higgins (Franklin CC) and John Gilmartin (Indian Ridge CC). Senior amateur Paul Murphy (Charles River CC) was the team's low senior amateur scorer on Friday with 4½ points, while Jack Kearney (Elmcrest CC) finished with the most senior amateur points - 9½ - through two days.

Congratulations to Team Massachusetts on a job well done!
