Headline: A Field of the Top Bay State Senior Amateurs Set to Compete in 2010 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship at Plymouth Country Club

For Immediate Release: September 13, 2010

A field of 120 senior amateurs from across the state have traveled to Plymouth Country Club to take part in the 2010 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship.

Plymouth, MA — A field of the state's top senior amateur competitors have traveled to Plymouth this week to take part in the 2010 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship.

At stake is the prestigious Frederick J. Wright Memorial Trophy which has been awarded to the winner of this event since its inception back in 1961.

Due to the interest and popularity of this championship, qualifying was introduced two years ago in order for the final field of 120 competitors to be determined.

Included in the list of competitors in 2010 is defending champion Paul Murphy (Charles River CC), who is enjoying a strong summer of golf.

Over the past few months, Murphy — who was featured by Marvin Pave in recent issue in the Boston Globe (click here to read that article) — was one of only four Bay State seniors to compete in the 2010 British Senior Amateur Championship, finished as medalist at U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying and most recently captured the 2010 Massachusetts Senior Four-Ball Championship with longtime friend and partner Jim Finnerty (Stockbridge GC).

One year ago at Salem Country Club, Murphy won his first Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship title 21 years after winning the Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship.

Murphy will be challenged this week by a strong field including Jack Kearney (Elmcrest CC), who is making waves during his first season as a senior amateur (he turned 55 years old earlier this summer), and several former George M. Cohen MGA Senior Players of the Year such as Joe Keller (Oyster Harbors Club), Jim Ruschioni (Monoosnock CC), Bob Linn (Berkshire Hills CC) and Alistair Catto (The Orchards GC).

Following Monday's first round of play, the field will be repaired according to score. Starting times and scoring links are available to the right.
